Chirundu, is a frontier town on the Zambezi River, on the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe. It is the main hub for the transportation of goods coming from South Africa and heading to the North, and vice-versa.
This village is characterised by the presence of lorry drivers, their legacy being the development of prostitution and an increase in HIV infections.

Endless truck convoys, transporting containers full of goods, stand in line for days in Chiurundu, while the truckers wait for the necessary paperwork.

Chirundu has the highest concentration of prostitutes in Zambia, where one woman in ten is HIV positive.

Prostitutes often accompany truckers on their long trips, returning to their village after several weeks.
In some cases they become pregnant and their children are also infected with the HIV virus.
 

Il villaggio di Chirundu, diviso dal fiume Zambesi, è un posto di frontiera tra Zambia e Zimbabwe dove si registra un gran passaggio di merci che arrivano dal Sudafrica dirette verso il Nord e viceversa.
In questo villaggio si è sviluppata un’attività di prostituzione e di contagio del’HIV/Aids a causa della presenza di centinaia di camionisti.
Infinite carovane di camion, che trasportano container carichi di merci, sostano a Chiurundu per alcuni giorni, in attesa che i camionisti ricevono i documenti necessari per lo sdoganamento delle merci.
A Chirundu si trova la più alta concentrazione di ragazze prostitute dello Zambia, dove una donna su dieci è sieropositiva.
Le prostitute spesso accompagnano i camionisti nel loro lunghi viaggio, per tornare nel loro villaggio dopo diverse settimane.
In alcuni casi rimangono incinta, infettando il proprio bambino.
